Estimate for tax year 2026 using the standard deduction. Your employer's withholding can differ slightly. How we calculate.
How your New York paycheck is calculated
- Gross pay: salary ÷ pay periods, or hourly rate × hours (+ overtime at 1.5× for hours over 40 in a week).
- Pre-tax deductions: 401(k), 403(b), 457, health insurance, FSA and commuter benefits lower your taxable wages. New York follows the federal treatment for most of them.
- Federal income tax: 2026 brackets after the $16,100 standard deduction (single).
- FICA: Social Security 6.2% (up to $184,500) + Medicare 1.45% (+0.9% above $200,000).
- New York State income tax: brackets from 3.9% to 10.9% after the NY standard deduction ($8,000 single).
- Local income tax: NYC residents pay NYC tax; Yonkers residents pay a surcharge; non-residents working in Yonkers pay a small earnings tax.
- NY SDI and Paid Family Leave: small employee contributions.
- Net pay = gross − all taxes − deductions.

| $1,077,551 – $5,000,000 | 9.65% |

New York's FY2026 budget cut the five lowest rates by 0.1 point for 2026 (another 0.1 point is scheduled for 2027). Rates above match the 2026 NYS-50-T-NYS withholding tables.
New York also uses a tax benefit recapture for high earners (above ~$107,650 AGI): the benefit of the lower brackets is gradually taken back, so very high earners pay their top rate on all income.
New York City income tax
If you live in any of the five boroughs, you pay NYC personal income tax. It doesn't matter where you work. Commuters who live outside NYC do not pay it.
| NYC taxable income (single, 2026 — unchanged from 2025) | Rate |
|---|---|
| $0 – $12,000 | 3.078% |
| $12,001 – $25,000 | 3.762% |
| $25,001 – $50,000 | 3.819% |
| Over $50,000 | 3.876% |
Yonkers tax
- Yonkers residents: a surcharge of 16.75% of your net New York State tax.
- Non-residents who work in Yonkers: 0.5% of wages earned there.
NY SDI and Paid Family Leave
- SDI (disability): employees pay 0.5% of wages, capped at $0.60 per week ($31.20 a year).
- Paid Family Leave (PFL): a percentage of wages up to an annual cap set every year. 2026: 0.432% of wages up to $95,348.76, so a maximum of $411.91 a year (2025: 0.388%, max $354.53).
Worked example: $75,000 salary, living in New York City
Single filer, paid every two weeks (26 paychecks), no pre-tax deductions.
Federal income tax (exact, 2026): taxable $75,000 − $16,100 = $58,900 → $1,240 + $4,560 + $1,870 = $7,670 FICA: Social Security $4,650; Medicare $1,087.50
NY State tax (2026 rates):
- Taxable = $75,000 − $8,000 = $67,000
- 3.9% × 8,500 = $331.50; 4.4% × 3,200 = $140.80; 5.15% × 2,200 = $113.30; 5.4% × 53,100 = $2,867.40
- = $3,453.00
NYC tax: on $67,000: $369.36 + $489.06 + $954.75 + $658.92 = ≈ $2,472.09
SDI: $31.20 · PFL: 0.432% × $75,000 = $324.00

New York paycheck laws worth knowing
- Minimum wage 2026: $17.00 in NYC, Long Island and Westchester; $16.00 in the rest of the state. Indexed to inflation from 2027.
- Pay frequency: manual workers must be paid weekly (unless the employer has a DOL authorization); most other employees at least twice a month.
- Overtime: 1.5× for hours over 40 a week (44 for residential employees who live in).
- Pay stub: must show rates, hours, gross pay, deductions and net pay (Wage Theft Prevention Act).
How to take home more in New York
- Increase 401(k) / 403(b) / 457 contributions. They reduce federal, state and city tax.
- Use pre-tax commuter benefits (NYC employers with 20+ employees must offer them).
- File a correct IT-2104. NY withholding doesn't automatically follow your federal W-4.
- Check the NY Earned Income Credit and the NYC EITC if your income is lower.
- Claim the federal overtime or tips deduction if it applies to you (federal only; New York has not adopted it, so state tax still applies).
