The 2,080-hour rule
A full-time job is usually 40 hours a week for 52 weeks:
40 × 52 = 2,080 working hours a year
Employers, the U.S. government (OPM) and most job sites use 2,080 hours to convert between hourly and salary pay. The number assumes paid holidays and vacation, which is normal for salaried jobs.
If your time off is unpaid, use your real hours instead. For example, with two weeks of unpaid leave: 40 × 50 = 2,000 hours. The calculator's "weeks per year" field handles this.

Before tax vs. after tax
All the numbers above are gross pay. Your paycheck is smaller because of federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and, in most states, state income tax.
Worked example: $25 an hour in Texas (single, 2026)
- Gross yearly: $25 × 2,080 = $52,000
- Federal taxable: $52,000 − $16,100 = $35,900 → 10% × $12,400 + 12% × $23,500 = $4,060
- Social Security: 6.2% × $52,000 = $3,224
- Medicare: 1.45% × $52,000 = $754
- Texas state tax: $0
- Take-home: $43,962 a year ≈ $3,663.50 a month ≈ $1,690.85 biweekly
In a state with income tax, the take-home is lower. Pick your state in the calculator to see the real number.
Salary vs. hourly: what's different?
- Overtime: hourly (non-exempt) workers earn 1.5× after 40 hours. Many salaried workers are "exempt" and get no overtime. Check our overtime calculator.
- Pay stability: a salary is the same every paycheck, while hourly pay changes with your hours.
- Benefits: salaried roles more often include paid time off. Compare offers on total compensation, not only the rate.
Frequently asked questions
How much is $20 an hour a year?
$41,600 a year before taxes, based on 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (20 x 2,080).
How much is $60,000 a year hourly?
$28.85 an hour (60,000 divided by 2,080 hours).
Why 2,080 hours and not 2,000?
2,080 equals 40 hours times 52 weeks. Use 2,000 only if you take about two weeks of unpaid time off each year.
How do I calculate my monthly salary?
Divide your yearly salary by 12. Do not multiply weekly pay by 4, because a month has about 4.33 weeks.
What's the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
Biweekly means every two weeks (26 paychecks a year). Semi-monthly means twice a month (24 paychecks a year).
How much is $25 an hour after taxes?
In a state with no income tax, such as Texas or Florida, about $43,962 a year for a single filer in 2026. In states with income tax it is less.
