Overtime Calculator

Updated October 14, 2026 Tax year 2026 How we calculate

Use this free overtime calculator to find your overtime rate and total pay. Enter your hourly wage and the hours you worked. The calculator shows your time-and-a-half rate, your overtime pay, and your total gross pay for the week.

Quick answer: Overtime pay = hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. If you earn $20 an hour and work 48 hours in a week, your overtime rate is $30, your overtime pay is $240, and your total pay for the week is $1,040 before taxes.

Federal law (FLSA) requires 1.5× the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states also have daily overtime. See your take-home with the hourly paycheck calculator, or your tax savings with the overtime tax calculator.

How to use the overtime calculator

  1. Enter your hourly rate. Use your base pay before taxes.
  2. Enter your hours. Put up to 40 hours in "Regular hours" and every hour over 40 in the workweek in "Overtime hours".
  3. Pick the multiplier. Time and a half (1.5×) is the federal rule. Use 2× for double time if your state or contract requires it.
  4. Add bonuses if you got them. Some bonuses raise your overtime rate (see below).
  5. See your total pay, then click through to estimate your take-home pay after taxes.

How overtime is calculated

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), most hourly workers (called non-exempt employees) must get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek.

Formulas

  • Overtime rate = regular rate × 1.5
  • Overtime pay = overtime rate × overtime hours
  • Regular pay = regular rate × 40
  • Total pay = regular pay + overtime pay

Important rules

  • The workweek is a fixed 7-day period (168 hours) set by your employer. It doesn't have to start on Monday.
  • Hours are not averaged across two weeks. Working 50 hours one week and 30 the next still earns 10 hours of overtime for the first week.
  • Paid holidays, vacation, and sick time usually don't count as hours worked for overtime, unless your employer's policy says they do.
  • Your employer can't skip overtime just because it wasn't approved in advance. They can discipline you for unapproved overtime, but they still have to pay it.

Worked example 1: $20/hour, 48 hours

Item Calculation Amount
Regular pay 40 × $20 $800.00
Overtime rate $20 × 1.5 $30.00/hr
Overtime pay 8 × $30 $240.00
Total weekly gross pay $800 + $240 $1,040.00

Overtime added 30% to this worker's weekly pay.

Worked example 2: overtime with a bonus

Non-discretionary bonuses (production, attendance, or shift bonuses that are promised in advance) must be included in the regular rate. Suppose you earn $20/hour, work 45 hours, and get a $90 weekly production bonus.

Step Calculation Amount
Straight-time pay 45 × $20 $900.00
Plus bonus — $90.00
Regular rate $990 ÷ 45 hours $22.00/hr
Overtime premium (half-time) 5 × ($22 × 0.5) $55.00
Total weekly pay $900 + $90 + $55 $1,045.00

Without counting the bonus, the overtime would have been only $50 (5 × $10). The bonus raised it by $5. Small amounts like this add up over a year.

State overtime rules that go further

Federal law is the minimum. Some states add more:

State Extra rule
California Overtime after 8 hours in a day; double time after 12 hours in a day; special rules for the 7th straight workday
Alaska Overtime after 8 hours in a day or 40 in a week (employers with 4 or more employees)
Nevada Daily overtime after 8 hours in a 24-hour period for workers paid less than 1.5× the state minimum wage
Colorado Overtime after 12 hours in a workday, 12 consecutive hours, or 40 in a week

If federal and state law both apply, you get whichever rule pays more. See the California paycheck calculator for daily overtime.

Who doesn't get overtime?

Exempt employees are not owed overtime. To be exempt under the FLSA, a worker usually must:

  • be paid a salary (not hourly), and
  • earn at least the minimum salary level, and
  • do mainly executive, administrative, or professional work.

Salary alone doesn't make someone exempt. Many salaried workers still earn overtime. The federal salary threshold for the white-collar exemption is $684 a week ($35,568 a year). A 2024 rule that raised it was struck down by a federal court in November 2024. Some states (such as California, New York and Washington) set higher thresholds.

Is overtime taxed more?

No. Overtime is taxed at the same rates as your regular pay. A big overtime check can look like it's taxed more because withholding treats that check as if you earned that much every period. Any extra withholding comes back as a refund when you file.

Under the 2025 tax law, the premium part of overtime (the "half" in time and a half) may be deductible from federal income tax for 2025–2028, up to $12,500 a year. Use our overtime tax calculator to see how much you could save.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate time and a half? Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $18 an hour, time and a half is $27 an hour.

Is overtime after 40 hours or 8 hours a day? Federal law uses 40 hours in a workweek. A few states, like California, also require daily overtime after 8 hours.

Do salaried employees get overtime? Some do. Salaried workers who earn under the exempt salary level, or whose jobs don't meet the exempt duties tests, must get overtime.

What is double time? Double time is 2× your regular rate. Federal law doesn't require it, but California does after 12 hours in a day, and some union contracts include it.

Does PTO count toward overtime? Usually not. Overtime is based on hours actually worked unless your employer or contract counts paid leave.

Can my employer give comp time instead of overtime pay? Private employers generally can't. Comp time in place of overtime pay is mainly allowed for public-sector employees.

Is overtime taxed at a higher rate? No. It's taxed at your normal rates, but withholding on a large check can be higher. The extra comes back at tax time.

How much is 10 hours of overtime at $25 an hour? $25 × 1.5 = $37.50 per hour × 10 = $375.
